Dream a Little Dream of Me.

Celebrating Freedom

Celebrating Freedom by Creativity+ Timothy K

Kate and I of course returned to the scene of the crime, and later watched the fireworks aboard Camp LejeuneLee Ann Womack performed, and she was lovely.  I’m not a big fan of country music, but I recognized one or two of her songs.

I was a little bummed that they didn’t have a Marine Corps band this year.  I love hearing the band play the 1812 Overture, with the cannons firing at the end with the music just as the fireworks start.  The fact that Tchaikovsky was not an American bothers me not a whit, just so y’know.  Yes, I’ve actually heard that complaint about playing the 1812 on the 4th of July.  It’s a stupid complaint.

It was wasn’t as sticky-hot this year, as we had a front moving in that brought the most wonderfully warm summer evening breeze.

The fireworks people had some new stuff this year, things we hadn’t seen before.  The Rainy-Downy Things (that’s our technical name for them) were very cool, though we were a little concerned about the fire hazard.  Each of those had quite a bit that hit the ground still ablaze.

The launch site was quite a bit farther from the spectator field than in the past, possibly due to The Rainy-Downy Things.  Unfortunately, that seemed to lower the impact of the display.  Two or three of the munitions fired during the finale went off early, very close to the ground, and that always worries me for the people on the ground working the display.

It was a fun night, traffic out wasn’t as bad as usual, and we crawled our still-stuffed-from-the-cookout asses into bed shortly after getting home.

From whence came the art:

Puss ‘n Boots and Other Odds ‘n Ends

Gossiping Ducks., by foxypar4 @ FlickrThere are a couple little things that have accumulated in my files, things that I wanted to mention on the blog here at UDoJ, but are short little things more amenable to being Tweeted at Twitter, really. I’m going to round some of them up and sort of make a grab bag for you.

First and foremost, Kate needs good head. She’s changed the look of her blog, which is really cool looking now. But she needs a header graphic. I’ve thought about doing it myself, but in all honesty, I’m afraid there will be too much ‘me’ in it, and not enough Kate.

Molly suggested holding a contest, to see who can come up with the most Kate-like header graphic. I’m kind of liking that idea, and maybe if she feels a little more at home, she’ll post more. (Knee high leather boots would help with that, just so y’know.)  If there’s interest, maybe that’s just what we’ll do. Plus, giving Molly a peek above our garters is sure to get us a peek above hers. Well, that’s more like a long stare, actually…

One Hundred Pages

I’ve been pretty quiet in the blogoverse lately. There’s a couple reasons for that. For one thing, I’ve just been in a quiet mood. Not down or anything, just quiet.

For another, I’ve been making progress on my novel, The Lilith Quotient. I was stuck for the longest time. I had some vague ideas of things I wanted to do, but each time I tried to implement them, they just came out crappy. Recently the massive mental block I had began to crack and words began to flow a little better.

Some of the issue is anal retentiveness, I think. I made some notes throughout the copy I had in hand, like “add this here” or “rewrite this transition” with the intent of moving the story along and then coming back to clean up a little. Unfortunately, as they accumulated, they sat in the back of my mind, nagging me to distraction, so I couldn’t write chapter seven because I was distracted by something back in chapter three.

I finally just forced myself to begin at the beginning, and tend to every single note before I moved on. I looked at the first note. I stared at it. I read and re-read all the text leading up to that note. Days passed. Hair grew six inches on my legs. Presidents came and went, and still I stared at that note. I finally had an idea about it, ran with it, wrote it down. It sucked, but it was forward progress. I reworked it. Better. I reworked it again, better still. I stared, I thought, they fed me liver and macaroni and cheese with a tube. I worked at it. I got it to where I could live with it and move on.

I made a point of reading all your blogs once in the morning and once at night, and only commenting if I just couldn’t control myself. The withdrawal symptoms wracked my body and mind, but I persevered through the pain. I got a feed reader to lessen the temptation and speed up my surfing. The notes called to me.

The next note went a little easier, and the next one easier than that. I re-read the text from beginning to the next note. I made more notes, then addressed them.

After much work, I’m proud to say I’ve taken care of all the notes and I’m moving forward. Yesterday, I cracked a hundred pages, and the story is still moving. It’ll still need work when I’m done, but it’s together enough that it’s not nagging me anymore. Words have always come easily to me, so this is entirely outside my experience. I think it’s just a matter of the length. I’ve never attempted to write anything so very long as a novel.

I sent out a couple of copies for feedback, and I’ve gotten a few suggestions and assists.

Now my blog is collecting cobwebs, and it’s beginning to nag at me, so I’m posting this as much to shut my brain the frack up as much as I am to give you an update. I limited my time for this post to five minutes, so forgive me if it’s a little rough.

I’m happy now. I’m going back to the novel.

In Case You Didn’t Know

From Namaste to Shimmy to Mambo

Belly dancer, by The Kosovar @ FlickrConfession: I try to catch Namaste Yoga on FitTV whenever I can.

Disclaimer: I try to ignore all the “energy leaving your body through the third eye” mumbo jumbo and treat it as nothing more than a visualization for relaxing. It works OK for me. I really enjoy doing the exercise and listening to the voice of the instructor. Her voice really soothes me and sort of makes the whole thing work.

I’ve mentioned before, and our posting habits pretty well reflect that while Kate is an early bird, I’m a night owl. Grace is a little of both, but mostly a night owl. She stayed over last night, and while channel surfing I flipped past FitTV sometime around 0:dark30, and something new was just coming on: Shimmy.

Shimmy is sort of yoga meets belly dance, so being such a fan of Kristine, I had to jump right in. Kate’s used to our doing Namaste at odd hours of the dead of night, so it rarely elicits more than a muffled appreciation of a particular body position Grace and I might be in when she peeks from behind her tousled locks of obsidian satin hair with one half-opened eye. (That is unless she’s in need of some attention.) For whatever reason, last night was a little different.

Kate And The Transgendered Purple Octopus Alien

Love is the galactic language. So I’m browsing around, strolling through the archives here because I’m rather morose over Aunt Helen news and don’t feel like posting anything substantial, and bumped into the first mention of the Transgendered Purple Octopus Alien on this blog (actually we were still on Blogger back then, but whatever).

I guess it might be that he’s a prude, but I don’t think so.

I think what’s going on is that he’s afraid all his friends will make fun of him, or he’ll get in trouble at UD for hanging out with a “homo girl”.

That’s just dumb. Did I already say that? Well, I’m saying it again.

First, I’m not a “homo girl”. I already said I wasn’t a lesbian. I kissed a girl. I did some other stuff. With a girl. So what? What is this, 1952? 1893? 1407? Am I gonna get burned at the stake now? It felt good, and I’m gonna do it again. Tonight. Twice.

And what if I WAS a lesbian? Or a bisexual? Maybe I like sleeping with Martians! Maybe I want to tell the whole world that I had sex with a Trans-gender Purple Octopus Alien from Mars! What the hell does that have to do with anything? It wasn’t rape, so piss off to anyone who doesn’t like it. The Trans-gender Purple Octopus Alien from Mars kinda liked it! He/She is coming over tomorrow and we’re gonna do it on the front lawn! With Kate! (I’m gonna introduce her to the joys of tentacle love. ) )

The TraPOA makes occasional reappearances here from time to time, so regular readers should remember her/him.

Anyways, I remembered that I came across a portrait of her/him and Kate a while back and forgot to show that to you.

It’s below the fold.

What If You Find Something Totally Cool?

(Post by Kate, crossposted from Kissing Corporal Kate)Thousands of Sexy and Funny Images at DarkCasket.com

A great big peek above our garters to Dr. Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer for his helpful post about the Galaxy Zoo website. (Plus I’ve been dying to use this image and it’s perfect for this!)

So you’re addicted to Galaxy Zoo, and while identifying galaxies hither and yon you found some killer cool galaxy image. Did you discover something new? Could this be the scientific breakthrough of all time?

Probably not. But it’s still wicked nifty, and you want to find out more. What to do?

Actually, it’s not too hard. What you need to find out is the name of the galaxy — really, the catalog number. If the galaxy is bright/big enough, it’ll be in some catalog like the New General Catalog or the Uppsala Galaxy Catalog.

If you haven’t visited the Galaxy Zoo yet (direct link to the Galaxy Zoo here), I highly recommend it. It’s a website that allows you and I, the average Jane and Joe, to assist astronomers in sifting through the terrabytes of images that are being collected. There’s so much stuff coming in these days that Astronomers just can’t sort it all.

Help science, and look at pretty space pictures. What could be more fun in your underwear? OK, BESIDES that! Seriously, mucho coolio funno.

Read the BA’s step by step instructions and there’s some more helpful hints and some beautiful finds in the comments there, so don’t skip ’em.

(NOTE: We’re still working on killing the spam trojan. We want to be sure it’s gone before we ask to be removed from the blacklists. So we still can’t comment over there. I hope he doesn’t think we don’t love him any more.)

Pour Some Sugar On Me

Over at Celluloid Blonde, Sulya got that as her stripper song.

This is a delayed post, just to give you something dreamy to wake up to.

I love the ’80s stuff. Great song for strippin’, too. I so need to install a pole in the bedroom now. Def Leppard and a stripper pole. What else does a girl need in her bedroom?

You gotta squeeze a little, squeeze a little
Tease a little more
Easy operator come a knockin’ on my door
Sometime, anytime, sugar me sweet
Little miss innocent sugar me, yeah

Oh baby. Sugar me. Two lumps, please. Maybe three.

Latin Week

Lepus Fucim CumloudercumMoving on from Shakira and Christina Aguilera, it looks like Latin will be a theme this week.

Kate and I will be heading to the park this afternoon for a nature walk to do an in depth study of Lepus Fucim Cumloudercum, or common humping park rabbit.

If you’re in the neighborhood stop by and join us.  It shouldn’t be too hard to find us.
