PZ and Abbie

But I totally get it if you’re completely distracted.  Do the best you can, and watch it a few times, if you have to.

It’s like science porn for your brain.  Feel free to touch yourself.

I did.

Here is the News – ELO instead of AP

Homeland Securtiy, by Thomas Hawk @ FlickrHere is the news:

Peeks above our garters go to both Bug Girl and Afarensis for this unsettling news.

Here is the news:

It seems the Associated Press has decided that the doctrine of Fair Use should not apply to Bloggers who quote from its articles. To that end, it has unveiled a fee schedule for quoting it, which it hopes to enforce in a rather grimy fashion.

Here is the news:

The AP is offering up to $1,000,000 to anyone who turns in a blogger who refuses to ante up $12.50 for quoting between five and twenty-five words of their material.

Here is the news:

Kiss my ass, AP.

Here is the news:

I’ll get mine elsewhere before I pay you a fracking dime.

Here is the news:

Electric Light Orchestra – kindly uploaded by SonyBMG to their official YouTube channel.

The Devil and Shelley Batts: Fireflies and the Goop of Satan

The Devil and Shelley BattsA peek above our garters for this to Shelley Batts over at Retrospectacle.

Ever wonder what makes a firefly glow in the dark?

On my way over to a friend’s house last night, an unusual thing happened: a firefly which was in the process of lighting up got squashed against my windshield at that exact moment. While there wasn’t much resembling an insect left, smeared across the glass was a streak of glowing green goo which continued to fluoresce for 5 or 6 seconds before fading into black. In fact, in the last few moments the guts glowed brighter than the bug did.

Which got me thinking about 2 things. One, how do fireflies bioluminesce? And two, does science use this glowing protein in a similar way as GFP (green fluorescent protein, found in some jellyfish)?

I Got Stoned And I Missed It

Cover of the Rolling Stone… to quote an old song by Dr. Hook.

Actually, somebody misplaced it. Don’t worry though, the cops found it.

A peek above our garters to GrrlScientist for this little chuckle:

A policeman found an abandoned rental truck — its engine still warm — sitting by the side of the road, the back stuffed with plastic-wrapped bundles of marijuana.

“Somebody’s going be in some major trouble for walking away and leaving that quantity sitting on the side of the freeway,” said Sgt Telfinues Preszler Jnr of the California Highway Patrol.

“I’m glad I’m not him.”

Whoops.

Leap On Over

To Chaotic Utopia and wish Karmen a Happy Lack Of Birthday.  It must really suck to get skipped three years out of four.

Or maybe she’s just so special that the world can only handle the celebration once every four years!

Kisses to Karmen!

General Housekeeping And Thank Yous

Just a quickie to point out some changes and stuff around here you may or may not have noticed.  A peek above our garters to all the folks mentioned below.

We’ve recently added a few blogs to our blogroll.  Lab Cat is now in our Rollcall of Science Chicks section.  Cat is a food chemist, and she blogs about food, life, knitting, and music, all pulled together in purpley prose.

In our general blogroll, we’ve added Deacon Barry, ΛUSTIN ΛTHEIST ΛNØNYMØUS, Just Another Sad Song (My niece KaylaFace’s new WP blog), Sex In The Public Square (Elizabeth Wood’s eloquent blog discussing sexual issues and public policies and attitudes) with new contributor Tom Joaquin whose blog The Free Lance has also been added, and YoYo-Dyne Propulsion Labs.  Great blogs, all.

Down in the Various Links section you’ll note the new link via the graphic of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom. To quote a dear friend of ours,

“NCSF is a very cool organization. They write amicus briefs in important cases to do with kink or porn etc. You’ll like them. 😉 “

True that.

Let me also take a moment to thank those bloggers who’ve recently added UDoJ to their own blogrolls, most of whom are listed above.

Additionally, I’m rather proud to announce that we’ve been added to the blogroll of another one of our favorite bloggers.   Rebecca at Skepchick has also honored us with a place in her sidebar, and we send out a very big special kiss and a peek above our garters to her as well.

Take a moment to visit each of these fine blogs, and be sure to poke your head in at the NCSF, too!

Don’t Make Me Have To Hit You

So Aunt Dr. Tara just got back from the AAAS meeting in ‘Frisco, and it sounds like she had a nice time.

But (there’s always a ‘but’, isn’t there?) –

However, along the lines of the “networking” idea, I was browsing the program Friday night and noticed a networking breakfast that looked interesting, to be held Saturday morning: “women and minorities in science.” Great, right up my alley, I thought.

I read the next line.

“Invitation only.”

I left her a suggestion for next time…
