Dream a Little Dream of Me.

The Writers Guild Makes It Happen – Pay Them.

No Justice, No Slogans, by Planetgordon @ Flickr

The short version:

Writers get paid like 4 cents when you buy a $20 DVD. They get nothing when their work gets sold or makes advertising revenue online. With virtually no overhead and exactly zero royalties to pay, the industry is in a nearly 100% profit zone by putting everything online.

Since the companies wouldn’t have anything to put online without the writers, you might call that biting the hand that feeds you. I’d call it fucking people over.

Let’s think of it like this. Let’s say I’m a hooker and you’re my regular 10:00 PM Friday.

The situation is akin to you getting the best lay of your life from an exceptionally skilled and talented prostitute and then bitching about the bill… and in this case the bill was like half a buck, you cheap fucking bastard. And then you have the audacity to ask for unlimited free blow-jobs.

I’m really beginning to not like you. You’d better go read this and this about the strike, courtesy of Max Adams. Max is a screenwriter, and she’s beginning to not like you too, so I suggest you go read those before she puts the smack-down on your cheap ass.

Besides, my 10:15 is due any minute, Speedy.

From whence came the art:

Oh, I would hate to have you put the snark on me. :walks off shaking her head and muttering: “Speedy, ouch”

  2. JanieBelle says:

Fear not, oh Eloquent One. I only use my powers for good.

  3. Infophile says:

Hey, it may only have been half a buck, but that was a Canadian buck we’re talking about. Nowadays, those are pretty valuable, you know! Ahem. Sorry, can’t stop pointing that out, even when there isn’t a Republican within miles who might be an appropriate target.

Sarcasm aside, I fully support this writer’s strike, and I’m quite willing to sacrifice new programming until those profiteering bastards in charge get a clue.

  4. JanieBelle says:

    Me too, Infophile.

I wonder if there’s anyone organizing a viewers’ solidarity strike. If the Neilsens plummet and the execs know why, seems like that might add some outward pressure to assist them in removing their crania from their anal cavities by reducing advertising revenue.

    Hmmmm…

  5. Infophile says:

Problem with the Nielsons is that only those people hooked up the the network so what they watch is recorded are actually counted in the statistics. If you aren’t, it doesn’t make any difference to them what you watch. My family actually was hooked up for a few months, but then they bought a DVD recorded and the company didn’t have the technology to handle that…

But in any case, whether you’re hooked up to the pollsters or not, there is one thing everyone can do – stop watching this content online. Each hit there is counted, and the companies – but not the writers – get money for it. We can help cut out their profits from that end, and this is a particularly appropriate way to show support.

“Puts the smack-down on your cheap ass”?

    That cracks me up.

Thank you for linking in Miss Janie. Smooch!

  7. JanieBelle says:

Always happy to put a smile on your face, Max. And this time I won’t even charge you the usual half a buck.

    Kisses

  8. JanieBelle says:

P.S. Not that you’ve been keeping up with your tab anyway…

    😉

  9. max says:

Oh well do not hold your breath there I am on strike a lot of tabs are likely to go into the red around here.

  10. JanieBelle says:

Oh don’t worry about it, Max. Let’s just call it my contribution to the cause.

I won’t even charge you any interest.

We have a similar problem in this country which is handled by the Performing Right Society. Whilst I agree with the ethos of this, they can be rather heavy handed. One thing they do which I totally disagree with is to try and charge people for listening to the radio at work. Radio stations pay to broadcast copywright music which is fine. But the PRS want busineses to pay a second tax to let their workers listen to it. They come out with this nonsence that it is a “public performance”. Crap. No one is making any money out of this, except the PRS, if we let them get away with this.

When I was in Germany and I told people that I was a freelance writer, they would look at me quizzically and ask, “In the United States? Why?”

Yeah, I started asking that myself, too.

Fucking people over is exactly what it is.

  13. Stiletto says:

    Love the hooker analogy. LMAO

    Bite his dick!
