Just in time for my return from computer darkness, Senator Larry Craig, gay hypocrite Republican Senator from Idaho announces that he may not resign after all. Just to further his embarrassment, he’s going to stick with the Wide Stance Defense and attempt to fight the charges to which he had already pleaded guilty.
You may have noticed I’ve withheld comment on Senator Larry Craig’s situation. There are several reasons for that, some of which I’ll share with you now.
Senator Craig is a Republican from Idaho who was recently for busted trolling for sex in a men’s restroom in a Minneapolis airport. I’ve had a few reservations about the actual arrest, but given the Senator’s ridiculous “wide stance” explanation and his surreptitious guilty plea, I think it’s pretty safe to say that he was doing exactly what he was arrested for doing.
My first problem is that although it sounds kind of icky to be looking for sex in a public restroom, I certainly don’t think it should be illegal. Is it also illegal to have heterosexual relations under the same circumstances? If I drag a man into the ladies’ room and boink his brains out, would I also be arrested? Do they patrol the ladies’ room at all? I doubt it, as medieval laws in this vein almost invariably focus on male homosexuality. Fundies who seek to stomp out Teh Gehy really obsess about mens’ butts. Kinda makes ya’ wonder, given all the very vocal proponents of such legislation that have recently tripped and fell out of the closet.
My issue of course with the Senator is not that he’s gay but rather that he’s part and parcel of the Right Wing Conservative agenda of dehumanizing people who are gay, and given the fact that it turns out that despite his shrill protestations he himself is as gay as the day is long, he is certainly deserving of scorn and ridicule.
My problem with the Republican indignation over Senator Craig’s behavior is that it seems to pick and choose which scandals to be indignant over. Notice the difference between the Republican party’s treatment of Senator Craig (busted for trolling for gay sex), and Senator David Vitter of Louisiana (busted for patronizing prostitution establishments in two jurisdictions) or Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska (busted for corruption). Which one of the three is singled out for calls for his resignation? The hypocrisy is glaring.
But I originally withheld comment because I wasn’t sure of his stance (hehe) on things like the DOMA or civil rights protections for Americans with orientations other than the one he had publicly professed. Turns out that although I’d never heard of the guy, he’s a pretty big part of the problem. By the time I had done enough research to ascertain that he was in fact both a Wingnut and a monster-sized hypocrite, the story had aged, Craig had announced his resignation, and I had lost interest.
So now, just in time for my return from computer darkness, Senator Larry Craig, gay hypocrite Republican Senator from Idaho announces that he may not resign after all. Just to further his embarrassment, he’s going to stick with the Wide Stance Defense and attempt to fight the charges to which he had already pleaded guilty.Too funny. Apparently, indecision is his hallmark. He can’t decide whether he’s gay, whether he was trolling for sex in Minneapolis mens’ rooms, or whether he should resign his seat in the Senate.
Let me help you out a little, Senator –
