Sean Fritz and Tim McQuillan Seal First Same Sex Marriage In Iowa

Anéis | Rings

Not wasting any time and taking advantage of a $5 waiver of the waiting period in Iowa, Sean Fritz and Tim McQuillan sealed the deal on the front lawn of Unitarian minister Rev. Mark Stringer.

A few hours later, Judge Robert B. Hanson formally stayed yesterday’s ruling that the law declaring that valid marriages were only between a man and a woman was unconstitutional, and that the state had no valid interest in arbitrarily discriminating against same-sex couples by denying them the right to marry.

Mike Nifong Gets Gentle Slap On The Wrist

Trust No-one, by BanksyIn the state of North Carolina, repeatedly lying to several courts attempting to inflame racial tension, deceive the public as well as the courts, and convict people you know to be innocent in a effort to gain reelection and secure your pension comes with a serious price:

one day in jail.

Via CNN:

(CNN) — Embattled former district attorney Mike Nifong was held in criminal contempt of court and sentenced to one day in jail Friday for his actions in the flawed Duke lacrosse team rape case.

Nifong must report to jail September 7, Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith III said.

The judge said Nifong’s withholding of DNA evidence from defense attorneys was an affront to the integrity of the judicial system.

Judge Robert Hanson’s Same Sex Marriage Decision Rips “Experts”

Judge Robert Hanson’s decision totally rips the “expert witnesses” that the Defense (in this case representing the Polk County recorder, and by extension, the state of Iowa) tried to bring in. (I had to hand type all this, because of the format of the .pdf, so bare (hehe) with me.) Bolding is all mine:

“Ms. Somerville intends to testify “about the ways in which redefining marriage to include same-sex couples would undermine these roles of the institution of marriage, in turn undermining marriage’s ability and society’s capacity to protect the inherently procreative relationship and the children who result from it, and related matters” Id at 1-2. She also intends to testify regarding “the impact that redefining marriage to include same-sex couples would have on the affiliative rights of children to relationships with their biological parents, and related matters.” Id at 2. The Defendants have also submitted the statements and deposition of Paul Nathanson, Ph.D. Dr. Nathanson is a senior researcher in the Department of Religious Studies at McGill University and possesses a Ph.D. in Religious Studies. Nathanson indicates that he possesses expertise in the areas of: “the relation between religion and secularity; ethics (new reproductive technologies; children’s rights); popular culture (family and marriage); and gender (especially, maleness/masculinity).”

Iowa Court Rules Same Sex Couples Cannot Be Denied Marriage Equality

Anéis | Rings

Caught this rockin’ news just before heading to bed and had to share!

(ETA – The most thorough article I’ve found yet can be found at the DesMoines Register.  The Register is also hosting a .pdf of Judge R0bert Hanson’s decision in its entirety, here.)

(CNN) — An Iowa district court ruled Thursday that same-sex couples can marry based on the state constitution’s guarantee of equal treatment, court documents show.

The ruling was in response to a December 2005 lawsuit brought by six same-sex couples seeking to wed. They were denied marriage licenses and claimed such treatment violates equal-protection and due-process clauses in the Iowa constitution.

The court also struck down a state law declaring valid marriages are only between a man and woman.

The Boys Are Back In Town

Androgynous in JeansAfter a pair of seemingly eternal hiatuses (hiati?), the blogosphere is once again graced by the presence of two wonderful bloggers. Please drop by and welcome them both back.

In a cosmically coincidental confluence of androgynous proportions, the man who’s nom de blog is WhoreChurch explores your anus, and Molly tells us that she sometimes fantasizes about getting a blow job.

I ask you, what are the odds of that happening on the same day?

From whence came the art:

Erotic Literature

Foto Aun sin titulo.Have you read any good erotic literature lately?

I’ve never been very happy with the final chapter of The Itch. I really like the story up until the last chapter, and eventually I’m going to rewrite the final scene and give it a better ending.

In the meantime, I’m writing The Lilith Quotient as a novel. Although it’s sexy, it’s much less explicit so far than the early version posted on this blog. I’d call it Sexy Sci-Fi, but it might fit the description of Erotic Literature, and that concerns me a little for several inter-related reasons.

Basically, it boils down to this: being labeled “Erotic Literature” seems to be a death knell for a story, and if nobody buys it, nobody reads it, and that sort of defeats the purpose of writing it, doesn’t it? I’m sure there is a philosophical discussion involved there, but one of the big reasons I write is because I have an inner drive to share my thoughts and stories. I want people to read them. If nobody reads them, I might just as well talk to myself and save a lot of typing. (Let’s just not even go there with a philosophical discussion of JanieBelle talking to herself in her head. It’s still too early in the morning for that.)

Anyway, back to Erotic Literature. Why do such titles get skipped? I think there’s a whole chain of things, and again they’re all interlinked.

U.S. American Geography Education in South African Asian Iraq

…or something. Miss Teen South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton’s …interesting… response to the question “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is?”

A peek above our garters to Reverend Big Dumb Chimp for this.

According to the International Herald Tribune, Miss Upton fared a bit better on the Today show this morning. I’m guessing she had time to prepare a better response.

I’m thinking Miss Upton’s education may be a victim of the same process responsible for prompting the original question. Of course if our educational system had higher standards, we would never have been watching Miss Upton on YouTube.

I Like Swen

Swen, by Stefan Bucher @ FlickrSwen is very sweet.  Swen left me the most lovely little comment, and I wanted to share it with all of you.

Yesterday, just before noon, Swen said:

Awww.  Thank you Swen, that was very sweet of you to say.  It’s such a shame you’re a spammer and deserve to be hung by your nutsack until you die.

If This Doesn’t Make You Want To Grab A Heiney

I’m not sure what will.

Look, I’ll be the first one in line to burn advertisers at the stake. Ads are intrusive, annoying, almost never advertising anything I’d even be remote interested in, and if I wanted to know about your type of product, I’d come looking for it.

Add to that the hideous aesthetics and utter lack of creativity and originality of the vast majority of ads, and marketing folks and I will just not see eye to eye.  Spam does not improve my opinion of advertising, and repeated, insistent, unethical attempts to force ads and software onto my hard drive are legitimate grounds for a death-penalty conviction in my book.

But every now and again someone puts a little effort into an ad. They get creative, smart, funny, sexy, or some combination thereof that at least entertains me.

Below the fold resides one such ad.

Demand Justice for PFC LaVena Johnson

LaVena Johnson

By all accounts, LaVena Johnson was a happy, healthy, strong young woman when she joined the military as a supply specialist.

A few months later she was dead in Iraq, a victim of a non-combat gunshot wound to the head. As bad as the news of the death of their daughter, was the discovery of substantial evidence that she was raped, murdered, and her body twice set afire in a failed attempt to cover up the crimes. The United States Army is refusing to re-open the hitherto lackluster and barely cursory investigation into LaVena’s death, and in the face of this mounting evidence, their refusal is beginning to reek of a cover-up.

LaVena’s story can be read at LaVenaJohnson.com , and there is an online petition to the Armed Services Committees in Congress that you can sign there to demand that the Army re-open the investigation and actually put some effort into it this time.

Please take a few moments to read LaVena’s tragic and compelling story, and ask Congress to hold the Army to the standard which we expect of those in charge of looking out for our women and men in uniform.
