The Diva Dance – The Fifth Element

Oh My MillaThe Fifth Element is one of the best movies ever.

So I’ve taken a break from writing and editing, and I’ve been slummin’ the YouTube.

Knowing how way leads on to way, I bumped into The Diva Dance from the Fifth Element.

I love this clip. I don’t know exactly what it is, maybe the beautiful lilting melody transposed against the butt-kickin’ techno rhythm in the second half, maybe the butt-kickin’ hands and feet of Milla Jovovich against the butt-kickin’ voice of Inva Mula-Tchako, but this clip just plain kicks butt.

It’s below the fold.

::I got that picture of Milla Jovovich as a desktop wallpaper at wallpapers.skins.be, but for some reason I can’t seem to link you there.::

I love this clip too. Fyi, the first part is an aria from “Lucia de Lammermoor, and is sung by Sarah Brightman. Yes, the former Mrs. Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Ugh, why do people seem to randomly associate Sarag Brightman with anything classical?

The first half of that piece is from Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor “Il dolce suono”, more precisely, the mad scene of Act III, Scene I. The actress playing Plavalaguna is Maïwenn Le Besco, but the singing was done by the Albanian soprano Inva Mula-Tchako. The second half, known as “The Diva Dance” is also performed by Inva Mula-Tchako.

Thank you Viviane, I wasn’t aware of that, and I’ll have to find some clips of that now.

It’s always wonderful to see you here, by the way.

I’m watching it again, and something else strikes me that hadn’t ever before.

A week or two ago, I was flippin’ the channels on the idiot box looking for something interesting, and I came across some Kung Fu movies (they may have been on Spike?). These were very new looking.

What really struck me about them was how visually beautiful they were. Bright, rich colors everywhere. And the colors were co-ordinated with the clothes of the people in the scene, so when the character on screen was in a bright green lush bamboo forest, he/she was wearing matching green attire. Again, these were very new, although they retained some of the flavor of the old cheesy Kung Fu movies. Turns out I really enjoyed watching them.

The only one whose name I remember was “House of Flying Daggers” or “Shi mian mai fu” (2004).

Anyway, watching this clip again, I notice the big blue planet in the background while the (very blue) diva is on stage, and the orange colored room in which Leeloo (with her very orange hair) is fighting. Her little finger beckon, a nod to Bruce Lee it would seem, makes an interesting reference to Kung Fu movies, as well.

    Kisses
