Dream a Little Dream of Me.

Hang ’em High

I hope the feds show no mercy to this scum of the earth.

Via the Seattle Post-Intelligencer,

The Seattle man is accused of illegally clogging the planet’s inboxes with billions of illegal e-mails using hijacked computer networks.

You’ve probably heard from him, federal authorities say. Many times.

And with his arrest, you could see an immediate decrease in the amount of spam e-mail in your inbox, they said.

One expert estimated that the man agents dubbed the “Spam King” when they arrested him Wednesday sent billions, perhaps even tens of billions, of e-mails a day.

On just two groups of servers, in just a few months, federal investigators found more than 200 million spam messages linked to 27-year-old Robert Soloway.

Let’s face it, in the context of the events of the world today, Soloway’s crime is not earth-shattering. He didn’t kill anyone. He didn’t enslave anyone.

And yet, he’s probably in the top 20 most hated human beings on the planet.

More below the fold, as usual.

John Edwards Shows Backbone

John Edwards, Polk County IowaFellow North Carolina blogger Pam Spaulding (of Pam’s House Blend fame) publishes Former Senator Edwards’ response to a survey on LGBT rights from the Human Rights Campaign.

Edwards appears to be honest in his comments and the results are pretty positive. He answers he’s not for using The M Word, but the fact that he’s forthright about that is ironically in his favor I think. While Senator Obama seems to have backed off his earlier stance, and Senator Clinton seems to me to still be feeling out the issue for biggest political gain (see the comments at Pandagon here), Senator Edwards seems to be strongly in support of equality, and even supports the repeal of the federal “Defense of Marriage Act”, which basically says that the federal government will not recognize the marriages of same sex couples.

The survey and his answers are below the fold.

Cindy Sheehan Throws In The Towel

In disappointment, in disgust, in dejection, Cindy Sheehan announced today that she’s packing up and going home.

After her son Casey was killed in the war in Iraq, Cindy set up camp in Crawford, Texas down the road from the Bush “ranch” to protest the war. She demanded to see and talk to the President regarding the war, but was unsurprisingly rebuffed and ignored by He Who Would Be Caesar.

She stood her ground and fought the good fight, founded an organization called Gold Star Families for Peace, and I dare say played no small role in making it socially acceptable for patriots to speak out loudly and publicly against the illegal and insane debacle which is our involvement in Iraq.

But in a Web diary posted to the liberal online community Daily Kos on Monday, Sheehan said she was exhausted by the personal, financial and emotional toll of the past two years.

She wrote that she is disillusioned by the failure of Democratic politicians to bring the unpopular war to an end and tired of a peace movement she said “often puts personal egos above peace and human life.”

As The Boy mentioned in our local ENCToday forum,

…it is rather distressing to realize that politicians (of whatever stripe) are not beholden to the voters to keep the promises they made to get themselves elected. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a Representative Republic.

We feel your pain, Cindy. It’s totally understandable that you feel so frustrated, disappointed, and disillusioned. Democrats were overwhelmingly elected in November to end the war, and when the chips were down they folded like Tyson in the Buster Douglas fight.

It’s disgusting.

We’ll miss you, Cindy.  You’ve left some rather large shoes to fill.

Cervical Cancer Bill Passes State House and Senate

S260, a bill to require that North Carolina schools provide information on cervical cancer, HPV, and the vaccine against it to students in grades 5 – 12 at the beginning of each school year passed the state senate (48 – 0) and house (108 – 9) and was ratified today despite the objections of 9 state representatives (including our own George G. Cleveland).

A peek above our garters to the 108 members of the North Carolina House and 48 members of the North Carolina Senate who had enough sense to vote for this measure.

And a whole basket of big, nasty raspberries to Representatives Avila, Blackwood, Brown, Brubaker, Clary, Cleveland, Lewis, McComas, and McElraft for having their heads up their butts.

Jenny Heineman Rocks

I usually skip CNN’s videos, just because the ads they stick at the beginning are annoying, but this one was interesting enough to get me to click.

Stripping for Credit

Honors student Jennifer Heineman was taking Sociology courses overseas when she became interested in the sociology of sex workers.  When she returned to the University of Nebraska, Omaha, she realized that she needed some first hand research… so this consistant dean’s list student put on five inch heels and took off her clothes at The 20’s Club, a local strip club.  Her honors thesis is entitled “Work and Gender: A Midwest Strip Club Ethnography”.

Although she graduated Magna Cum Laude (appropriately enough) earlier this month, she intends to work to improve the rights of and remove the stigma from sex workers.  Very fortunately, she has the support of the chair of the Sociology Anthropology Department, Professor Shireen Rajaram.  “I think it is important for us as Sociologists, as Anthropologists to really shed light on some of the issues, especially the social injustices.”

Jenny says, “Y’know, a lot of these women are doing this to support their families, several of them are single mothers.  They work very hard in a job that can be quite tiresome.”

Her parting message in her CNN interview?  “Get to know your local stripper!”

You go, girl.

Not Another Hiatus

Just trying to catch up on all your blogs, the news, whatnot.

Still working on a couple of big posts, found some local blogs and fora, yada yada yada…

Lots of romping around with Kate and Grace.  Kate’s been especially frisky lately.  I wonder what’s up with that.  (Not that I mind all all…)

Just so y’know.

Christopher Hitchens Pulls No Punches

None whatever… He tells it like it is about Falwell. “Such a little toad…”, “evil old man”, “huckster”, “Chaucerian frauds, people who are simply pickpockets and frauds who prey on the gullible…”, “he woke up every morning… pinching his chubby little flanks and thinking ‘I’ve got away with it again'”, “a conscious charlatan, and bully, and fraud…”

“Lots of people are going to die, and are already leading miserable lives because of the nonsense preached by this man.”

That says it all right there.

A big ol’ peek above our garters to Reverend Big Dumb Chimp:

Amen, brother.
