A Better New Year’s Wish There Never Was

Molly’s wish to all of us, and the UDoJ crew’s wish right back to Molly.

I can’t tell you all how ecstatic I am that I found Molly’s Mirror.

I can however, tell you that you shouldn’t go read Molly’s New Year’s Wish until you’ve got some sort of sexual outlet handy.

You’ll need it.

Somebody Finally Stands Up To Nifong

From CNN:

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) — Ethics charges filed against the prosecutor at the center of the Duke lacrosse sexual assault case might constitute a conflict of interest that forces him off the case, legal experts said.

“It’s hard for me to imagine how he can be effective as an advocate, with either the court or a future jury, when he has ethics charges pending against him … concerning his conduct of this very same case,” said Joseph Kennedy, a University of North Carolina law professor.

The North Carolina bar filed the ethics charges Thursday, accusing District Attorney Mike Nifong of violating four rules of professional conduct by making misleading and inflammatory comments about the athletes under suspicion. (Read the full complaint (pdf))

It’s about damned time.

Idiot Admits Being … Well… An Idiot

From CNN:

KATY, Texas (AP) — A man unhappy with an Islamic association’s plans to build a mosque next to his property has staged pig races as a protest during afternoon prayers.

Craig Baker, 46, sold merchandise and grilled sausages Friday for about 100 people who showed up in heavy rain. He insisted he wasn’t trying to offend anyone with the pigs, which are forbidden from the Muslim diet.

“I am just defending my rights and my property,” Baker said. “They totally disrespected me and my family.”

At first this might look like some redneck with a case of Ismaphobia and a complete lack of manners, but that doesn’t seem to be the deal here.

Talk About Putting Off Motherhood

From CNN:

MADRID, Spain (AP) — A 67-year-old Spanish woman became the world’s oldest mother after she gave birth to twins in the northern city of Barcelona on Saturday, a hospital official said.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed by Sant Pau hospital, gave birth by Caesarian section on Saturday, having previously undergone in vitro fertilization in the United States, according to the national news agency EFE.

Mom and babies are doing well, though the little squirts are in incubators.

The gender of the babies was not released, and just for the fundies – neither was their sexual preference (or lack thereof).

Go bitch about it somewhere else.

The Governor Of Oregon Reads This Blog

Ok, probably not, but via Straight, Not Narrow, check out this quote from Governor Ted Kulongoski:

“This is about basic questions of fairness and equity under the law,” said the Governor. “We must continue to strive to make Oregon a state of economic and social opportunity for all of our citizens, regardless of race, gender, religion, age or sexual orientation.”

Look at the first sentence.  I believe I made the same point in much the same wording in the Jersey Girls thread (at least before it evolved into a “fundy trolls humiliate themselves” thread).  All Americans deserve to be treated as equals, regardless of the bronze age religious beliefs of a small number of rapidly more marginalized fringe dwellers.

I stand by my statement, and the Governor’s.  In fact, because it’s so late (or early now, I guess) and I’m feeling rather generous, he doesn’t even have to give me credit.  🙂

I ❤ Governor Kulongoski.

Robyn Returns The Favor

A Meme Spreads Like A VirusA while back, I tagged Robyn of Just Sayin’ and the author of Maryann with the Aristocratic Title meme.

While she didn’t specifically tag me with this one and I had seen it before (somewhere else), it was she who infected me with this one.

Jersey Fundy Minister Goes Down Swinging

Vinny Loves JesusBrought to us via Jim Johnson at Straight, Not Narrow:

Last week, Vincent Fields, minister of Greater Works Ministries in New Jersey, delivered the invocation before the New Jersey Senate, praying: “We curse the spirit that would come to bring about same-sex marriage. We ask You to just look over this place today, cause them to be shaken in their very heart in uprightness, Lord, to do what is right before You.”

That’s from an article entitled, “Wanted: More Ministers Like Vincent Fields”, by Mark H. Creech, in the Christian Post.

Rebecca At The Well

rebeccaatthewell.jpgThe story of Rebecca from the National Gallery of Art (in reference to a painting of the same name):

The story of Rebecca at the well comes from the Book of Genesis. The aged Abraham, wanting a wife for his son Isaac, sent his servant Eliezer to his homeland of Mesopotamia to find a suitable woman. Tired after his long journey, Eliezer stopped at a well and prayed for guidance. When Rebecca offered water to Eliezer and his camels, the old steward recognized her as the appointed bride and presented her with the betrothal jewels offered by the kneeling servant.

The photograph I’ve posted with this blog entry is actually from my family. The woman portraying Rebecca is my first cousin, three times removed, Rebecca “Peg” Skirving. The photograph was taken in the late twenties by her step-father, Joe Harrison.

I’ve always found artistic representations of ancient stories fascinating and magnetic. Museums full of these sorts of things swallow me whole whenever I visit them, and I’m usually dragged out kicking and screaming.

It’s probably why my avatar of John Collier’s painting of Lilith has stuck with me, and why I like Kate‘s avatar of Collier’s painting of Lady Godiva so much.

I bring this up for a reason, not just because I think I’m in love with the ghost of my distant cousin Rebecca (she died back in 1998 at 87 years old and I actually never met her).

It’s actually because this portrait of Molly somehow reminds me of Collier’s Lilith.

I’d actually like to ask Molly if she would do a depiction of that painting (the snake would be an issue, though!), but I’m not sure of the etiquette of making such a request.

Can anyone help me out here? Would it be rude to ask her?
