ID wipes out in Michigan

Once again, science prevails and fundies go down swinging.

From LiveScience, a bit of reason for your day.

Full Story.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) ─ The State Board of Education on Tuesday approved public school curriculum guidelines that support the teaching of evolution in science classes ─ but not intelligent design.

Of course, the fundy lawyers whine….

Richard Thompson, leader of the Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, said intelligent design should have a home in science classes. The center describes its mission as defending the religious freedom of Christians.

“It would make students more knowledgeable about science and more interested in science,” he said in a phone interview. “Evolution is a theory. It’s not a fact.”

Umm… yeah. HELLO?

Exactly how does “Goddunit” make students more knowledgeable about ANYTHING?

For those of you in Michigan, be sure to vote this election…

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, a conservative Christian, said last month that he approves of intelligent design being taught along with evolution in science classes, though he said the decision should be left up to local school districts.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who is Roman Catholic, said Michigan schools need to teach evolution in science classes and not include intelligent design. She said school districts can explore intelligent design in current events or comparative religions classes.

“Evolution is a theory, not a fact.”

Apparently we have to keep saying this to these people:

Evolutionary theory is a theory about (i.e., explanation of) evolutionary fact.

By analogy: that Scott Peterson killed his wife Laci is both a theory (presented in court by the prosecution), and a fact (reaffirmed by the jury’s verdict). Evolution should not be a “law,” any more than “Scott Peterson killed his wife” should be a law.

Laws are descriptive statements of phenomena; theories are descriptive explanations of the phenomena. A law doesn’t trump a theory; a theory explains the behavior described by the law.

But whatever, I’ve tried and tried to get this into people’s heads, and they still think that a physical law “forces” matter to obey it, rather than just describing what matter does, and that theories are guesses. Uggghh…

    /rant off

I hear ya’. Going round and round with liars and idjits kinda wears on ya’ after a while, don’t it?

Are they serious? Come on! The Thomas More Law Center? You’ve got to be kidding me. The same people that lost in Dover are surprised they lost the exact same case in Michigan?

I guess they must hate Judge Jones so much they are trying to distance themselves from his evaluation of their professionalism. You know, the one where he said they did a bang up job in the case.

If they’re surprised about this loss they’re clearly not all that smart.

  4. JanieBelle says:

Yep. What’s that one word? You know, the one where you keep doing the same thing over and over but expect different results…..

Good to see you, blipey. We were worried you fell off the edge of the earth or something!
