I usually skip CNN’s videos, just because the ads they stick at the beginning are annoying, but this one was interesting enough to get me to click.
Honors student Jennifer Heineman was taking Sociology courses overseas when she became interested in the sociology of sex workers. When she returned to the University of Nebraska, Omaha, she realized that she needed some first hand research… so this consistant dean’s list student put on five inch heels and took off her clothes at The 20’s Club, a local strip club. Her honors thesis is entitled “Work and Gender: A Midwest Strip Club Ethnography”.
Although she graduated Magna Cum Laude (appropriately enough) earlier this month, she intends to work to improve the rights of and remove the stigma from sex workers. Very fortunately, she has the support of the chair of the Sociology Anthropology Department, Professor Shireen Rajaram. “I think it is important for us as Sociologists, as Anthropologists to really shed light on some of the issues, especially the social injustices.”
Jenny says, “Y’know, a lot of these women are doing this to support their families, several of them are single mothers. They work very hard in a job that can be quite tiresome.”
Her parting message in her CNN interview? “Get to know your local stripper!”
You go, girl.

I am always amazed at how little an understanding people have of sex workers.
One sees offensive comments like this “Although she graduated Magna Cum Laude … she intends to work to improve the rights of and remove the stigma from sex workers,” far too often.
I’d be interested in seeing how successful she is in her stated intention. A whole society needs to be moved in the appropriate direction.

Hmmm.. Perhaps that was indeed poorly phrased (the crack about appropriate honors notwithstanding).
My intention was not to demean her stated intention, but to point out that graduating Magna Cum Laude she could easily enter a much more profitable and “socially acceptable” field but instead chose an arena where she is desperately needed.
